At Bespoke Care and Support Services, we pride ourselves on delivering award-winning care that respects the diverse backgrounds of our team, service users, and local community. As we mark Eid al-Adha on 6th June 2025, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the importance of Eid in Islam, and what it means to our Muslim colleagues and service users here in Huddersfield and across Kirklees.

🌙 What is Islam?

Islam is one of the world’s major religions, with over 1.9 billion followers globally. Muslims believe in one God (Allah in Arabic), and follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who is regarded as the final prophet in a long line of messengers including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.

Muslims live according to the Five Pillars of Islam, which include:

  1. Shahada – Declaration of faith

  2. Salah – Prayer (five times a day)

  3. Zakat – Charity or almsgiving

  4. Sawm – Fasting during the month of Ramadan

  5. Hajj – Pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca

These pillars serve as the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and practice, shaping daily life, values, and community.

🌟 What is Eid?

There are two major Eid celebrations in Islam:

  • Eid al-Fitr – Celebrated at the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and spiritual reflection

  • Eid al-Adha – Known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” observed during the Hajj pilgrimage season

Today, Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid al-Adha, which commemorates the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham's) devotion to God, symbolised through his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to divine command. It’s a day marked by prayer, charitable giving, family meals, and the sharing of food—especially with those less fortunate.

🕌 What Does Eid Mean to Our Community?

In Central Huddersfield, we are proud to work alongside a diverse team that includes many Muslim staff members. For them, Eid is a deeply meaningful occasion—a time for:

  • Coming together with family and friends

  • Reflecting on gratitude and faith

  • Wearing traditional clothing

  • Attending special prayers at the mosque

  • Cooking and sharing festive meals

  • Giving to charity (known as Qurbani and Sadaqah)

We are grateful to our colleagues who continue to provide outstanding personal care and support, especially those who choose to work during this special time.

🤝 A Message of Solidarity and Respect

At Bespoke Care and Support Services, we recognise that cultural understanding and religious awareness are essential parts of delivering person-centred care. Whether you are observing Eid or supporting someone who is, we encourage everyone to:

  • Ask questions with kindness and curiosity

  • Respect time off and spiritual needs

  • Celebrate the richness of different traditions within our care teams and community

To all who are celebrating: Eid Mubarak – may your day be filled with peace, joy, and blessings.
